Pregnancy-related musculoskeletal tissue impairment is common and ranges from strain on the pelvic ligaments to injury to the pelvic floor and changes associated with fascial system, including widening of the linea alba and associated abdominal wall, referred to as diastasis rectus abdominis (DRA). Although common, impacting 30-50% of parous women, DRA remains a clinical presentation characterized by misinformation and an overall care approach that is often not evidence-based. The literature base has proliferated on the topic of DRA in the last 5 years yet clinical and consumer based understanding is yet to catch up. In this talk, Dr. Sinéad Dufour will provide an overview of the state of the science of DRA covering topics spanning from how the condition is characterized, to assessment, prevention, management and current practice gaps. In most cases, conservative management strategies are established as first line care, as such physiotherapists in particular, alongside other primary health care and fitness providers are well-positioned to play a key role in appropriately guiding women with this common issue.
Leerdoelen
- understand the need to mount a cohesive evidence-based approach in the conservative management for pregnancy-related DRA
- how to determine when pregnancy-related DRA requires care beyond conservative intervention
- the audience will appreciate the discussion of inter-relation of tissue function through the perinatal care period of which the pelvic floor and abdominal wall are central
- understand DRA as a clinical issue that spans well beyond tissue relationships and incorporates multiple physiological systems that need to be considered
- participants will have enhanced clinical reasoning that will lend to both prevention and management of pregnancy-related musculoskeletal conditions including but not limited to DRA
