PowerTalk: Youth Athlete Low Back Pain

Do you know the most common cause of low back pain in young athletes? Do you know when the vertebra fuses and can start to apply adult pathologies? The assessment, diagnosis and management of Youth Athlete Low Back Pain is quite different to low back pain in the non-athlete population and adult athletes, If you are not aware of the differences it is impossible to diagnoses and rehabilitate the young athlete.

This lecture will teach you to ask the right questions to establish the presence of known risk factors for low back pain in this unique population group such as load, sleep, and energy balance. You will be taken step by step how to assess, grade and rehabilitate a young athlete safely back to sport.

Youth Athlete Physiotherapist, Angela Jackson, has over 30 years’ experience in managing sporty adolescents. She will highlight research associated with lumbar bone stress injuries, discuss what other pathologies can occur and when to refer for imaging. She will also share her ideas about how to educate the coaches, young athletes and their parents to prevent low energy availability, managing intensity and the small steps that they can take to reduce their risk of developing low back pain.

• Be confident in early diagnosis of lumbar bone stress injuries in sporty adolescents
• Be able to assess and understand the risk factors associated with injury to improve treatment outcomes and reduce the risk of recurrence.
• Know how to assess when an athlete is ready & confident to return to sport/play
• Be able to recognize signs of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport
• Know how to educate the child and parent on the impact of poor nutrition, sleep, workload management and stress on lumbar bone stress injuries
