PowerTalk : Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome in athletes: assessment and management

This Powertalk will address the increasingly commonly diagnosed condition of femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) as a cause hip pain in athletes and active adults. It will provide an overview of common causes of hip pain, how to conduct an evidence-based and appropriate assessment and surgical and non-surgical treatment options for FAI syndrome.
Leerdoelen
- Gain an understanding of the clinical entities of hip and groin pain in athletes and active adults.
- Gain an understanding of common causes of hip pain in athletes and active adults.
- Gain an understanding of the definition and typical presentation of femoroacetabular impingement syndrome.
- Be able to conduct a targeted and relevant subjective assessment of an athlete with hip pain
- Be able to screen for red flags in athletes with hip pain
- Be able to rule out other common causes of hip pain (especially lumbar spine and SIJ)
- Be able to use and interpret imaging appropriately in athletes with hip pain
- Understand which measures of physical impairment to use in athletes with hip pain
- Understand the risks and likely benefits of hip arthroscopy in athletes with hip pain
- Understand how to design and conduct an evidence-based and tailored physiotherapist-led treatment program for athletes with hip pain (including return to sport and physical activity).
- Be able to engage athletes with hip pain in the shared decision-making process with treatment decisions.
- Be able to recognise when physiotherapist-led treatment is not appropriate, and other treatments such as surgery may be necessary.
