Doelstelling van de cursus :

Exercise for patients with cancer before, during and after treatment has grown from being unadvisable to highly advisable during the last two decades. Today exercise programs are offered as preparation to treatment (mostly surgery), as a supplement during treatment (chemo- and /or radiotherapy) and as rehabilitation. The participants will get an insight in how the field of evidence has develop from the first studies in exercise oncology until today and be provided with the most recent insights about the role of physical training in cancer rehabilitation and its influence on the physical capacity, muscle strength, functional capacity, quality of life, anxiety and depression.

Leerdoelen :

The participants will also gain more knowledge about basic exercise physiological mechanisms of training in cancer patients and will learn how to use this knowledge in tailor-made provision of physiotherapy to this group of patients and will get a thorough insight in the rationale for using exercise for patients with cancer from early to advanced stage of cancer (curative to palliative).
Finally, this course will give examples on how to create “exercise societies” for current and former patients with cancer, where participation in “Ironmans”, “marathons” or first “5 km run ever” is used to get patients back to a normal life.

Dr Morten Quist is a associate professor at the Copenhagen university and a physiotherapist clinician-researcher with 20 years expertise in exercise for patients with cancer at the university hospital of Copenhagen (Rigshospitalet). He is the cofounder of the “Body and Cancer” and founder of the EXHALE program. Dr Quist received his PhD from The University of Copenhagen in 2015, on the topic of Exercise and Advanced Stage Lung Cancer, His main research area is exercise and lung cancer and he has developed exercise programs for patients with lung cancer in all stages (early and advance) and in different treatment modalities (diagnostic, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy). He received the Danish Cancer Society honour award in 2015. Besides his research he has co-founded and co-created two exercise communities in Denmark (Proof of Life and PACT) for both cancer survivors and patients with cancer. Proof of life is an exercise community for young cancer survivors’ between 18-40 and PACT (physical activity after cancer treatment) is an exercise community for cancer patients with no age level.
